Visual Arts
Art History and Applied
Intermediate and Advances Painting and Drawing

All visual arts majors take a year of art history. The course explores art theory and criticism and the arts of ancient and primitive societies in the first marking period. European art from the fall of Rome to the Baroque occupies our study for the second marking period. The third marking period concentrates on the Baroque age through the contemporary. In the final marking period, we take a close look at the development of American art and architecture. It is during this course that the students are expected to demonstrate the ability to write effectively in essay form and to support argument with fact, as well as, but distinct from, opinion.

In the Art Theory Applied/Basic Design course, students are provided with lessons that increase facility in drawing, painting, and invention in problem-solving.

In intermediate and advanced painting and drawing course, students in their junior year are expected to demonstrate fully developed skills in drawing and painting as they seek to develop works for exhibition that demonstrate true mastery of subject matter, techniques, and materials. Each student will be exposed to as many techniques as possible and they will be expected to exhibit the best in conduct, self-criticism and self-motivation.

The visual arts students enter into a rich tradition of successful student exhibitions and involvement in community art and they are expected to leave their own mark of distinction and contributions to their community, their school, and to themselves.
